Gimbernat Surgical Symposium 2022
Welcome to the third edition of Scalpel - Gimbernat Surgical Sympsium 2022.

In this year's edition, we have increased the number of students up to 91 places. Moreover, we have created new surgical workshops regarding Vascular Surgery, Urology, Gynecology, Bandages and Basic Life Support.
The first session was titled: "The future of Surgery: digital revolution continues". It was delivered by Prof. Eduardo Targarona, Head of the Gastrointestinal and Hematological Surgical Unit in Hospital Sant Pau, Barcelona.
Dr Targarona explained the new challenges that new generations will have to face in terms of technological advances and big data.
On the second conference, Dr. Irene Bello, Senior Faculty of the Thoracic Surgery Service of Hospital Clínic, gave a session named: "Thoraric surgery: beyond lung cancer".
In this presentation, Dr. Bello highlited the main areas and pathologies that this surgical specialty treats. In her slides, we could see several pictures and videos from real surgeries as well as learning a bit more the insights of this specialty.
After this sessions, students could have a small coffee break to get to know each other, and the first surgical workshops started to take place.
After this, the first workshops started to take place. This year's surgical workshops have been:
- Basic suturing skills and knots
- Training in basic laparoscopic skills with the Pelvitrainer simulator
- Simulated trauma scenarios
- Cardiac surgery workshop: aortic valve replacement
- Vascular surgery workshops: aortic aneurysm and vascular anastomosis
- Dermatology surgical skills: skin graft and flaps
- Traumatology bandages
- Opthalmological surgical techniques: keratoplasty
- Urological surgery: ureterorenoscopy
- Gynecological surgery: hysteroscopy
- Basic life support: cardiopulmonary resuscitation

On the last day, diplomas were delivered to all students who had attended the workshops. We also delivered the Best Surgery Teacher of the Year Award to Dr. Anna Casajoana. Finally, several MIR exam scholarships were raffled among the present students.
We hope that all of the students who participated had a great time learning and practising surgery. See you again next year!
Special thanks to all of our collaborators, specially the surgeons of Hospital del Mar, who instructed the surgical workshops. Finally, special thanks, as always, to our Honorary President, Prof. Manuel Pera, for his unconditional help and support.
